I Made It:: Laundry Detergent

Have you made your own laundry detergent? Amber posted about her homemade laundry detergent and I decided then I was going to make some. If she can make it, I’m sure I can. (giggle)

Wait, wait, wait. I’m getting ahead of myself. You are probably wondering who I am. Because those are clearly not Amber’s kids and I am not Amber. I am Ashley; working behind the scenes tracking down deals, new printable coupons,  and helping to answer questions on Facebook. When I’m not on the computer I am a mom to Jackson and Ella and wife to Chad.

My biggest reservation about the homemade detergent was will it get my kids clothes clean. I have two small kids who can make a rather large mess. But like I said I am willing to try anything once. I made my list of things I needed and headed to Walmart; striking gold on my trip. Everything I needed was on the laundry detergent isle and I even scored a bar of the Fels Naptha soap that everyone says they have a hard time finding. Purchased my loot and head home to make my detergent.

Measuring my washing powder and Borax, the water, and grating the soap was simple enough. I originally forgot to heat mine so it did not “melt”. Oops. But that was easily taken care of by pouring my mixture into a large pot and heating. I let it sit over night, stored in a plastic pitcher I had, and the next morning was excited to try my new concoction on the laundry I had waiting. Yay!

I am now on my second batch of the detergent and can say I am pretty satisfied with the way it cleans my laundry. If I happen to  have some tougher stains I still  pre-treat with my favorite stain remover.

  1. Is this HE dertergent?

  2. Karen- yes. I use this in my Electrolux HE machine all the time & have had no problems.

  3. As a part of home economics my kids and I made the borax/fells naphtha dry mix and we really loved it. We did that about 2 years then we found out that if you watched the drugstores/Kmart/Walmart we could get Xtra/Purex/and other soaps for less than we could make it for. We have about 80 bottles stocked up and always look for more because we like to donate our surplus soap to the local White Oak Animal Shelter.in PA just south of Pittsburgh. As a single mother of 3 and Nana to one I have to stretch a buck tight. So a couple of years we started clipping surplus coupons and that is how we started Kikis Coupon Clippers. My son and daughter sort and do IT work while my boyfriend sorts, does administrative work. He works from home and so do we. I love hunting for deals in my jammies:) I just found your site! LOVE IT!
