The Clearance 3-3-2 Rule
Why do I avoid “The Day After Sales?” Well, because items aren’t truly at their rock bottom deal price.
Every holiday sparks a rush of clearance items after the celebration ends, so how do you know when to strike? What day should you shop to receive the deepest discounts?
I call it “The Clearance 3-3-2 Rule.”

3-
- The first three days following a holiday, items are reduced to 50% off.
3-
- The following three days are sales of 75% off regular prices.
2-
- The next two days (or until stock is depleted) are bargain prices of 90% off or more.
Depending on how in demand the items you need will determine when you should shop. If you absolutely have to have a new fake Christmas Tree for next year, you might want to shop during the first three days of the sale to ensure you carry home a new fake fraser fir.
If you’re simply looking for a few bags of candy or Easter decor for next year, you should probably shop when items hit 75% off. And if you don’t NEED anything, then I recommend browsing during the 90% off sales.
My favorite spots for holiday clearance? Target and Walmart of course, but also Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid have great post holiday sales!
